
Engine coughing on startup after a filter change, running out of fuel on the road, or simply a disconnected hose during maintenance: on the Peugeot 308 HDi, the diesel circuit can quickly lose prime. Before pumping for an hour with no results, it’s wise to understand where the problem lies. Because in most cases, the issue is not the pump itself.
Air intake or real failure: the diagnosis before touching the diesel circuit
On forums, you often read the same scenario: the priming bulb doesn’t harden, you pump in vain, and you end up suspecting the fuel pump. The reality on the ground is more nuanced.

An air intake in the diesel supply circuit produces exactly the same symptoms as a faulty pump: impossible starting, stuttering, stalling. The difference is that the air intake can be resolved without changing any parts. Before re-priming anything, we check three points.
- The hoses between the tank and the fuel filter: a split hose, even slightly, draws in air instead of fuel. On the 308 HDi, the connections at the filter are a known weak point.
- The injector return: a leaking return seal allows air to enter the high-pressure circuit. It’s often identified by a slight smell of diesel around the injectors.
- The pump relay and fuse: if the lift pump doesn’t prime electrically (you don’t hear the buzzing when turning the key), the problem is electrical, not mechanical. We check the relay in the fuse box before disassembling anything.
This diagnosis takes a few minutes. It prevents wasting an hour pumping a bulb that won’t yield anything as long as the air leak persists. When you want to re-prime the diesel pump on a 308 HDi, this preliminary step saves a considerable amount of time.

Re-priming the diesel pump 308 HDi: the method with the priming bulb
Most Peugeot 308 HDi models (1.6 HDi 90, 110, or 2.0 HDi 136) have a manual priming bulb located near the fuel filter. On the 1.6 HDi, the filter is generally found on the left side of the engine compartment, sometimes slightly set back under a cover.
Locate the bulb and prepare for purging
Start by locating the air purge screw on the top of the filter housing. A quarter turn is enough to loosen it; there’s no need to remove it completely. Place a cloth or a small container underneath to catch the diesel that will come out.
Press the bulb with firm and regular pressures. The first few pumps will bring air, which is normal. Continue until you feel a solid resistance in the bulb and see diesel flowing from the purge screw, without bubbles.
Short starting sequences after purging
Once the bulb is firm and diesel is flowing cleanly, tighten the purge screw. The usual reflex is to turn the key and insist on the starter. This is the worst approach.
Proceed with starting sequences of a few seconds, interspersed with pauses. Turning on the ignition without starting for about ten seconds allows the electric lift pump to push fuel to the injectors. Then attempt a brief start. If the engine doesn’t start after three tries, go back to the bulb.
Insisting on the starter for too long without a break only drains the battery and overheats the starter, without improving the diesel supply.
Loosening injector connections: the field technique when the bulb isn’t enough
This is the point that most guides overlook, yet it’s often what resolves the situation on the ground. When the priming bulb has been operated correctly but the engine still refuses to start, air is trapped in the high-pressure circuit, between the pump and the injectors.
The solution is to slightly loosen (a quarter turn, no more) the fuel inlet connections on one or two injectors. Then ask someone to operate the starter in short bursts. The diesel mixed with air will seep out at the loosened connections. As soon as you see fuel coming out without bubbles, immediately tighten it back, injector by injector.
This maneuver requires a minimum of caution: pressurized diesel can spray, and you need to tighten to the correct torque to avoid damaging the threads. On the 308 HDi, the connections are accessible without special tools; a standard open-end wrench is sufficient. Feedback on this point varies by engine type, but the technique remains the same on both the 1.6 and the 2.0 HDi.

Peugeot 308 diesel filter: when the problem comes from the replacement itself
A difficult re-priming often occurs just after a fuel filter change. The new filter is installed dry, and the circuit ends up filled with air along its entire length between the tank and the engine.
Pre-filling the new filter with diesel before installing it significantly reduces the purging time. Pour clean diesel directly into the filter housing, let the filter paper soak, then close it and proceed with the normal priming. The difference is clear: instead of pumping for a long time to expel air from the entire circuit, you only purge the section between the filter and the injectors.
On some 308 HDi models, the button on the manual priming pump seems to do nothing, even after many presses. Before concluding that it is broken, check that the internal valve of the bulb is functioning: if no resistance builds up after about thirty presses, the valve is likely stuck or the diaphragm is punctured. A replacement bulb is inexpensive and can be installed in a few minutes.
One last often-overlooked point: on 308 models equipped with the BlueHDi engine, symptoms similar to a fuel supply failure can be caused by a cerine issue or a clogged particulate filter. If the engine warning light comes on alongside the starting problem, the diagnosis goes beyond simple re-priming and requires a reading of the fault codes.
